Delheim releases latest vintage of its flagship Grand Reserve


Latest vintage crowns Stellenbosch stalwart’s red wine portfolio

 Delheim Estate, nestled on the prime slopes of the Simonsberg, has released the latest vintage of its flagship bottling – a wine at the apex of the estate’s red wine portfolio: the Grand Reserve 2014.

Crafted vineyard-to-bottle with the specific intention of being the most exceptional expression of the harvest, the Delheim Grand Reserve is an eagerly anticipated red wine of the highest quality. Its name reflects the stature of this flagship wine in the estate’s highly awarded vinous array.


As with the previous release, the Grand Reserve 2014 is boldly led by Cabernet Sauvignon. Both Delheim and the Stellenbosch region are globally recognised as being home to South Africa’s most highly acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon wines. This has made the Delheim Grand Reserve a sought-after collector’s item since the range was established in 1981.

The Delheim Grand Reserve 2014 follows a release of the previous vintage and four-year hiatus for the wine before that. Where its predecessor comprised completely of Cabernet Sauvignon, the latest bottling partners this king of grape varieties with 10% Cabernet Franc and a 5% touch of Merlot.

“The 2014 vintage of Cabernet Franc showed particular finesse and structure. It just made the perfect component for this blend of the Grand Reserve,” says Delheim winemaker Altus Treurnicht. 

“Differences in the growing conditions during the winter of 2013 up to 2014 also had a huge influence on the two vintages. Ultimately, Mother Nature always has the last say when it comes to grape quality and the wine’s ageing ability. The Delheim Grand Reserve 2014 gives great recognition to the vintage of that year.”

The vines that produced the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine are planted in such a way as to make optimal use of the terroir and climate. The Cabernet Franc hails from a block nicknamed Vaaldraai; and, the Merlot, from Peperboom, at the foot of Klapmutskop hill.


The Delheim Grand Reserve 2014 is available for R285 a bottle at the Delheim winery as well as top end restaurants and wine boutiques.

Mushroom Blewits

I was anxious travelling around Germany in magnificent autumn coloured forests, racing from one client to the next and not being able to stop to look for mushrooms.

The most exquisite wine tasting venue was Schloss Erbach (Erbach Palace) in Odenwald- a castle with one of the best preserved collections of the middle ages war armour and also a place where you are not supposed to take photos, but we did!

The last afternoon before leaving Germany, I managed to convince some friends we need to go to the forest…and this is what we found!

Wood blewits, or are they? This is how we checked to see if they were real wood blewits:

We took a piece of black paper and white paper and placed a mushroom across the two sheets. This is used to see the spore print; if it is white/light pinkish it is a wood blewit and edible. If the spore print is brown then it is not edible. Placing a glass over the mushroom prevents the spores from being blown away.

12 hours later this is what we found on the papers- a white/light pinkish spore print. A real wood blewit and it is delicious to eat!

So we live to learn more and enjoy a greater range of mushrooms! Never try a mushroom you are not 100% sure is edible.

In  his fourth annual guide to South Africa, award-winning British wine-writer and Master of Wine Tim Atkin says the 2015 vintage is “the best I’ve tasted in 26 years of writing about the country’s wines” and should be a springboard to global recognition.

Atkin's publication, which runs to almost 190 pages in 2016 and is the product of two trips to the Cape this year, as well as further tastings in the UK and Germany, includes:

Delheim wins a Gold Outstanding and Silver award in the 2016 International Wine and Spirit Competition

Delheim is delighted to announce that we have won a Gold Outstanding and a Silver award in the 2016 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) for the Edelspatz Noble Late Harvest 2015 and Grand Reserve 2013 respectively.

Founded in 1969, the IWSC is considered to be the most prestigious competition of its kind in the world.

The awards given by the competition are believed to be among some of the highest honours in the industry. Judging for the Competition is unique in that it has two stages; first, the products are tasted blind by expert panels, selected from over 300 fully experienced and qualified industry judges. Products which receive the top medals are then subject to technical analysis before results are released; this crucial stage ensures winners receive complete validation.

Congratulations to our vineyard- and winemaking teams for once again putting quality wines into the bottle!
